Counselling is a form of talking therapy. It provides a safe space for you to feel heard, explore your emotions and behaviours and work towards goals, choices and decisions that are important to you.
Pluralistic Counselling is founded on the belief that no one model of therapy is better than the other. People are complex and individual beings, so one model simply doesn't fit all. Instead the Pluralistic approach draws on several different models, some of which are detailed below, in order to holistically tailor therapeutic sessions to the needs and goals of the client. Additionally, Pluralistic Counselling is seen as a collaboration between the therapist and the client. There is shared decision making as to the direction and method of treatment, which empowers the client in a truly therapeutic alliance.

Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Much as the name implies, CBT incorporates a cognitive approach (where you consciously identify and recognise thought processes) with a behavioural approach (where you work on changing the behaviour or things that you do in response to the thought processes). A key difference to most other therapeutic approaches, is that CBT looks very much as the present - what behaviours are you displaying and how can we change it?
Psychodynamic Therapy
Psychodynamic Therapy is rooted in the belief that your past informs your present - it aims to help you understand the root causes of whatever issues you may have. Your past experiences, memories, beliefs and even how your subconscious, can affect your current feelings and behaviours. It is a very self-reflective approach for clients looking to understand themselves.
Person-Centred Therapy
The Person-Centred approach to therapy keeps the client at the centre and in control of their sessions. The therapeutic relationship that the client and therapist build together through the core conditions, develops trust, safety and resilience to explore whatever the client needs to explore in that sessions - whether that be thoughts, behaviour, feelings, values.
Holistic Approach
As mentioned, the Pluralistic approach draws on all of these approaches and more, evolving to the individual needs of the client. The collaboration between client and therapist is key, it may not feel like it at the time to many, but the client is actually the expert on the client. They know what they need to feel safe, to explore and to work on. This approach is about giving them the resources, the time and support needed to empower them to realise this.
Psycho-education
Even as an adult, emotions and feelings can be hard to label and understand. I aim to help with this. Educational resources, such as a simple feelings wheel, have facilitated the most amazing reflections, discussions and realisations of what we are feeling and why. It has also provided so much insight when it comes to neuro-diverse clients. Mindfulness and relaxation techniques are also a big part of being able to stay present, an essential and effective skill to develop in our 'tool-kit-for-life'.
Carrianne has worked school settings delivering one-to-one and small group interventions, as an Advanced Drawing and Talking Practitioner for many years. Her Level 5 Counselling training has also consisted of specialised training and additional school-based placements, using creative play and art to complement the counselling process for young minds.
Drawing and Talking was one of the very first interventions I was lucky enough to receive training in. It is a beautiful, short term intervention that has the child in control of sessions and enables them to explore thoughts and feelings in a safe environment. All Drawing and Talking interventions are attachment based and work on the premise that this is the child's intervention - it is their time, their place and their space.
Drawing and Talking
Drawing and Talking runs once a week for a 30minute session for 12 weeks. Through this time, the children bring to session what they need to explore through their art work. Sometimes there is more drawing, sometimes there is more talking - the child is in control of what they bring to session. What I provide, is a safe and supportive environment that allows them to reflect and process along this journey. Drawing and Talking is suitable for ages 5 and above.
Sandplay
Sandplay sessions also run for a duration of 12 weeks. At each session, the child will select toys and figures to create miniature worlds with. Together we will then safely explore their feelings and emotions towards them. Sometimes, younger children are better able to express themselves through this more interactive and hands-on approach, which is why Sandplay is suitable for ages 4 and above.
Small groups
When Drawing and Talking is run as a small group, or even as a whole-class, intervention, it can really help children open up and create empathy and understanding between peers. Owing to the nature of group work, sessions run over 1 term only, so for 6 weeks. However they last longer than the one-to-one interventions - usually 45 minutes to an hour.
Commitment
I cannot stress enough that the commitment to sessions is key to their effectivity. One-to-one interventions are strictly set to twelve 30minute sessions; that works out as once a week for the duration of two academic terms. Obviously life events and unforseen circumstances can happen, but it is very important that children are seen at the same time and place every week. This builds trust and an effective therapeutic bond, which will enable the intervention to develop and work as it should for the child to process what they need to.
Whether it is through Drawing and Talking, Sandplay or Lego Therapy, these short-term interventions can help young children effectively learn about themselves.
